Muslim Leaders Emphasize Caution Ahead of New Year Celebrations in New Delhi
New Delhi – With the impending arrival of the New Year, Islamic leaders in Delhi are urging caution within the Muslim community, emphasizing the importance of aligning celebrations with Islamic principles. The growing influence of Western New Year’s Eve traditions, especially in Muslim-majority areas of Delhi, has prompted Muslim clerics to address the need for a balanced and mindful approach to festivities.
Several scholars interviewed by Clarion India highlighted the necessity for Muslim youth to refrain from extravagant celebrations and, instead, focus on positive actions that send a constructive message to the world.
Maulana Mufti Nesarul Hussaini, the Imam and Khatib of Masjid Anjuman Ittehad Manzil, expressed concern over the rising trend of disruptive fireworks, particularly impacting the elderly and sick members of the community. While acknowledging the permissibility of extending New Year wishes, he emphasized that certain celebratory activities, such as dance parties, bar events, and fireworks, are incompatible with Sharia Mutahira (Islamic law). Maulana Mufti Nesar Hussaini suggested alternative ways to celebrate, such as distributing necessities among the poor or contributing to the educational expenses of underprivileged students.
Imam and Khatib Maulana Muhammad Qasim Qasmi of Masjid Anglo-Arabic School stressed that Islam does not endorse the celebration of any new year. He encouraged individuals to reflect on their lives, avoid sinful activities, and seek Allah’s forgiveness rather than engaging in festivities that may lead to transgressions.
Imam and Khatib Maulana Muhammad Deem Qaimi Siddiqui Nanotwi of Ghata Masjid issued a strong advisory to parents, urging them to keep their children at home during New Year’s Eve. He emphasized that Islam strictly prohibits activities like fireworks, and adhering to Shariat (Islamic law) and legal regulations is of paramount importance.
On the security front, the police have also joined the call, urging youths to stay indoors during New Year’s Eve. The sale and purchase of firecrackers are banned nationwide, and the police will be vigilant to ensure compliance with these regulations.
As the New Year approaches, Muslim clerics advocate for a thoughtful and reflective approach to welcome the upcoming year, aligning with the principles of Islam and promoting the well-being of the Muslim community.
