NEWS PRISM BUREAU, UP
Varanasi– Comedian Shyam Rangeela’s bid to contest from Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi Lok Sabha seat has ended abruptly as his nomination was cancelled following an investigation due to not taking the oath during nomination. The disheartened comedian aimed to highlight the state of democracy but now finds himself out of the political race.
29-year-old from Rajasthan, Rangeela submitted his nomination papers for the Varanasi seat on May 14, with the hope of contesting against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. However, on May 15, after an investigation, his nomination was rejected. Rangeela explained, “We worked hard and faced many difficulties to file the nomination. We submitted all required documents, but today I was informed that I did not fulfill the oath taken during the nomination process, leading to the rejection.”

Visibly emotional Rangeela said, “I am a comic artist, but today I find myself unable to say anything. Our goal was to show how much democracy is in danger. Now, I understand that comedy is a better field for me and politics is not my thing.” He added, “Perhaps I did not get the blessings of Mother Ganga.”

Rangeela also accused the Varanasi district administration of complicating the nomination process. He stated, “The administration took 27 nomination papers in one day, causing confusion. This made it clear who they wanted to see proceed in the election.”
With Rangeela out of the race, the Varanasi Lok Sabha seat will see a contest between incumbent PM Modi, running for the BJP for the third time, and Ajay Roy, the candidate from the India Alliance. Athar Jamal Lari is contesting from the BSP. Voting for this crucial seat will take place on June 1 during the seventh phase of the elections.
