The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has partnered with the SWAYAM platform to offer free online classes for students in Classes IX to XII, aiming to make quality education accessible to all.
This initiative, led by NCERT as the National Coordinator for Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), targets learners across India, especially those in underserved communities.
NCERT, as the National Coordinator for MOOCs, spearheads this initiative to empower learners across India, with a focus on underserved communities.
SWAYAM, a government-backed digital platform, works to bridge the digital divide by providing high-quality resources to students who might lack access otherwise.
Through this collaboration, 28 courses spanning 11 subjects are available, including Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Accountancy, Business Studies, Economics, Geography, Psychology, Sociology, and English.
These courses, aligned with the NCERT curriculum, are designed to complement in-school learning.
Students can access them anytime, anywhere, via the SWAYAM portal or mobile app.
The platform offers a flexible learning environment, which is essential for those balancing studies with other responsibilities in diverse socio-economic settings.
The course structure is thorough, divided into four quadrants that enhance understanding.
Video lectures provide engaging content, while downloadable reading materials allow offline study—a key feature for students with limited internet access.
Self-assessment tools, like quizzes and tests, help track progress, and online discussion forums enable peer interaction and doubt resolution.
As an official from NCERT stated, “These resources guarantee that no student is left behind, regardless of their location or resources.”
Enrollment for these courses typically runs from April to September each year, with exams scheduled between September 10 and 15.
Registration for exams opens from September 7 to 9, and students can sign up through the SWAYAM portal or app.
The last date to enroll for these courses is September 1, ensuring students have ample time to join enroll by September 1.
The courses conclude on the last day of exams.
For support, a helpline via email and an Interactive Voice Response System (IVRS) addresses queries, guaranteeing accessibility for all users.
This initiative reflects a broader vision of digital inclusion, particularly for marginalized groups who often face barriers to education.
SWAYAM’s design, accessible across various devices, guarantees that even students with minimal technology can benefit.
Offline materials and interactive tools further support learning in remote areas.
Technical assistance is also readily available, underlining the government’s commitment to equitable education.
NCERT’s role as the National Coordinator ensures that the courses are tailored to meet the specific needs of school education for Classes IX to XII National Coordinator role.
