The journey from a small shop on Muhammad Ali Road to a nationwide medical service continues.

Mumbai- The Muslim Ambulance Society, a renowned medical and social organisation in South Mumbai, has proudly entered its tenth decade of service. Founded on July 24, 1932, the society has tirelessly provided medical and social aid to those in need, regardless of religion or caste.

What began as a small initiative in a shop on Chakla Street in the predominantly Muslim area of Muhammad Ali Road has evolved into a symbol of selfless service. To mark this milestone, the society announced plans for a grand function on Friday, January 24, at the Islam Gymkhana in Marine Lines.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, the President of the Muslim Ambulance Society, Dr Abdul Rauf Samar, highlighted the organisation’s rich history and its founding members, including Ibrahim Haroon, Ayub Haroon, Noor Muhammad Dhyan, Muhammad Hussain Samar, Akbar Ali Khan, and Abdul Rahim Bachuseth. “These seven individuals, moved by the pain of the nation, laid the foundation of the society with a mission to serve the poor and needy,” he said.

Dr Samar elaborated on the society’s early contributions: “In its initial days, the society set an example of compassion when it assisted a fellow countryman injured during Ganpati immersion by promptly taking him to hospital through an ambulance. During epidemics and riots, the society has consistently provided medical aid without discrimination.”

The organisation has expanded its reach beyond Mumbai, with branches operating in other provinces of India. Dr Samar announced plans to inaugurate a new branch on Duncan Road in South Mumbai soon.

“Free vaccination for children has been organised under our supervision, and free treatment for TB patients has been provided since 1973. For 93 years, the Muslim Ambulance Society has served patients with the help of generous philanthropists,” Dr Samar shared.

Vice President Anwar Pashuri, Honorary Secretary Tanveer Hawa, Honorary Treasurer Iqbal Mauledina, and other officials also participated in the press conference. Reflecting on the society’s enduring mission, Dr Samar added, “We hope to continue our services in the same way in the future.”

The Muslim Ambulance Society’s unwavering commitment to humanity exemplifies the spirit of community service, making it a cornerstone of medical and social aid in Mumbai and beyond.
