New Delhi: A two-day national seminar has explored the lives and works of Sahbai, Azarda, and Shefta, three lesser-known contemporaries of the celebrated Urdu poet Mirza Ghalib, at the Ghalib Institute in New Delhi.

Highlighting the significance of these figures in Urdu and Persian literature, Dr. Idris Ahmed, the Institute’s Director, emphasised the need for dedicated scholarly attention to Ghalib’s literary circle. While the Ghalib Institute has hosted numerous events focusing on the maestro himself, this marks the first-ever seminar solely dedicated to these influential contemporaries.

Renowned Persian scholar Prof. Azarmi Dukht Safavi delivered the keynote address, offering insights into the literary landscape shared by Ghalib and his contemporaries. Dr. Fariduddin Farid Asr, Cultural Counsellor of Iran, graced the occasion as a special guest.

Diverse sessions, presided over by esteemed figures like Prof. Atiqullah and Prof. Najma Rahmani, delved into the specific contributions of Sahbai, Azarda, and Shefta. Moderators like Dr. Safina and Dr. Ali Ahmad Idrisi guided lively discussions, fostering deeper understanding of these often-overlooked literary voices.

By dedicating two days to exploring the lives and works of Ghalib’s contemporaries, the Ghalib Institute sheds light on a crucial chapter in Urdu and Persian literary history. This seminar not only enriches our appreciation of Ghalib’s own genius but also offers valuable insights into the broader literary and cultural context of his era.
