NEW DELHI: The Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind has demanded the suspension and legal action against police officers involved in the alleged brutal beating of Arif Salim, a resident of West Vinod Nagar in the national capital.

According to the complaint filed by the organization, on the night of May 21, Salim was stopped by police over a minor traffic violation in Madhu Vihar area. However, the situation escalated, and Salim was beaten by the officers, who also hurled religious slurs at him.

“Arif was first beaten on the street, then taken to the police station where he was brutally beaten again in a dark room,” said Maulana Hakimuddin Qasmi, the General Secretary of Jamiat, while meeting with Joint Commissioner of Police Sagar Singh Kalsi.

After receiving minor treatment at a hospital, Salim was sent home, but his injuries and psychological trauma require close medical supervision, the organization said.

In a letter to the police, Jamiat chief Maulana Mahmood Madani demanded necessary medical treatment for Salim, immediate suspension and legal action against the guilty officers, an independent inquiry, and protection for Salim’s family.

Qasmi emphasized that the police are meant to protect the people, and the incident involving Salim is unacceptable. He stressed the need for reasonable compensation and better training for police officers to prevent discrimination based on identity.

The Joint Commissioner assured the delegation that all possible actions would be taken to ensure justice for the victim.

Local representatives, including Salim’s brother Tariq Saleem, were part of the delegation that met with the police officials.

The delegation demands for swift action against the errant officers and measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
