‘Handa Morcha’ Protest Leads to Calls for Urgent Solutions
MUMBAI- In the onset of the summer season, parts of the city grapple with a dire shortage of drinking water, exacerbating the daily struggles of residents. Particularly, Nizampura’s Kasaiwada area, situated in close proximity to the municipal corporation’s headquarters, finds itself at the epicenter of this crisis, compelling locals to resort to desperate measures to quench their thirst.
Led by Comrade Vijay Kamble, the stalwart leader of the Lalbauta Unorganized Labor Union, a ‘handa morcha’ was organized in front of the municipal corporation head office, drawing a significant turnout of impassioned residents, including a multitude of women wielding empty handas. The demonstrators echoed chants of ‘Pani do, Pani do’ (Give us water) as they voiced their frustrations and demanded immediate action from the city administration to alleviate their plight.
For years, the inhabitants of Kasaiwada have endured the relentless burden of water scarcity, with women and children often traversing to neighboring areas in pursuit of potable water. Despite the installation of a robust motor in the municipal corporation’s water supply pipeline, the promised relief remains elusive, compelling residents to resort to drawing water from nearby wells.
Recounting the perennial struggle, locals expressed dismay over the failure of a recently laid inch pipeline to deliver any water, exacerbating their already precarious situation. The dire circumstances are further compounded by the ongoing observance of Ramadan, heightening the urgency for access to water.
Comrade Vijay Kamble minced no words in condemning the perceived ineptitude of the municipal corporation’s water supply department, holding them squarely responsible for the prevailing crisis. He issued a stern warning, asserting that failure to promptly address the issue would only escalate tensions, potentially culminating in more vehement protests, even amidst the backdrop of the electoral code of conduct.
As the mercury rises and the specter of water scarcity looms large over Kasaiwada, residents are left with little recourse but to fervently implore authorities for swift and decisive action. The ‘handa morcha’ stands as a poignant reminder of the urgent need for equitable access to this most basic of human necessities.
The ball now squarely lies in the court of the city administration, as they are tasked with delivering on their promise to ensure the fundamental right of every citizen to access clean and safe drinking water. Failure to do so risks not only exacerbating the suffering of the residents of Kasaiwada but also undermining the very fabric of civic trust and responsibility.
